After about an hour of hiking up the steep slopes we made it to the top of Huayna Picchu overlooking Machu Picchu. The hiking trail to get up is well marked with some occasional stairs and rope railings; not technically difficult but still a good work-out due to the steep elevation changes. Make sure you bring water and a snack because there isn't anything but rock at the top. There is a stairway on the backside of Huayna Picchu that you can take down to the Urubamba River, but keep in mind that Huayna Picchu has an early afternoon closing time.
